Avoid greenwashing face powders made by brands that pretend to be organic, natural, safer, or eco-friendly when they are not. They will use their marketing tricks to convince you to buy their products.
Even if they are made with some natural ingredients they may still contain controversial ingredients such as mica, titanium dioxide, or petroleum-derived ingredients.
❌ Avoid Titanium Dioxide: CI 77891
Titanium Dioxide once considered by the FDA as GRASE (generally recognized as safe and effective) and not misbranded, Titanium dioxide is no longer considered safe.
Titanium dioxide: Classified as expected to be toxic or harmful. Toxic when it is ingested, so avoid sunblock lip balms or lipsticks with titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide is classified as a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, because of the potential for exposure through inhalation.
Banned in the EU for food application due to its potential carcinogenic effects. Titanium dioxide E 171 contains at most 50% of particles in the nano range (i.e. less than 100 nanometres) to which consumers may be exposed.
According to The Guardian: “The EU’s decision to phase out titanium dioxide came after a re-evaluation of the safety of the food additive conducted by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), an agency that delivers independent scientific advice to the EU about food-related risks.
EFSA scientists screened nearly 12,000 scientific publications. They were particularly interested in recent research on the “genotoxicity” of titanium dioxide nanoparticles – their ability to damage DNA and lead to cell mutations, potentially causing cancer. In animal studies, nanoparticles have been found to affect microorganisms in the gut, which could trigger diseases like intestinal and bowel inflammation and colorectal cancer.
❌ Avoid Mica: CI 77019
Mica is linked to child labor, often it takes place in developing countries that may rely on exploitative practices. Plus mica can contain heavy metals
Synthetic mica: is a man-made mica, called also fluor phlogopite, or synthetic fluorine, made with mica is colored with yellow 10, blue 1, and red 28, and many other fd&c food dyes that are derived from petroleum and banned in many countries due to potential links to cancer.
❌ Avoid petroleum-derived ingredients Cosmetic Colorants:
“CI 77742/Manganese Violet” is petroleum-derived and its synthesis requires ammonium dihydrogen phosphate: Comstock MC.
CI 15850/Red 7 Lake synthetic colorant
CI 42090 is a synthetic compound that gives a brilliant blue color to products
❌ Avoid Silica Amorphous: toxic for contamination with crystalline silica, used by some greenwashing brands.

👉With so many “clean brands” promoted as green, safe, and natural when they are not, certifications and ingredients are the ones to tell you the truth. ✅ USDA certification helps us to separate the greenwashing brands and brands that self-monitor, from the true organic brands that went through an intensive and expensive process, while undergoing on-site inspections. 💖Like Olga’s Organics. I discovered Olga’s years ago while searching for organic brands. Olga is the pioneer and creator of the first and only USDA organic face powder in the world!🌎 Difference: 👉Talc-free (aka asbestos) or fragrance-free or junk-free, like the majority of conventional face powder. 👉Free from synthetic or controversial ingredients, such as Silica Amorphous (toxic for contamination with crystalline silica) used by some greenwashing brands. ✨Olga’s Organics Face Powder is not only USDA Certified organic, but it is the only one I know of to be all mica-free and titanium dioxide-free.👏 🔎Many of you already know how challenging it is to find makeup without these common ingredients! 💚So here is my number one face powder recommendation, made with amazing organic food-grade ingredients. It includes the finest organic ingredients in a face powder in the USA. The "heavenly smell," and smooth and even application is what sets Olga's Organics Loose Face Powder apart. It comes in 3 versions: ✨TRANSLUCENT ✨LIGHT ✨MEDIUM ✅USDA Certified Organic ✅Vegan ✅Food grade ✅First and only

I don't recommend CRUNCHI Translucent Finishing Powder because it has a toxic ingredient: Silica (Amorphous)
Considered toxic: The major problem in the assessment of the health effects of amorphous silica is its contamination with crystalline silica. Occupational exposure to crystalline silica dust is associated with an increased risk for pulmonary diseases such as silicosis, tuberculosis, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer.
I don't recommend Laura Mercier face powder.
❌ Made with unhealthy, controversial, and toxic ingredients. Talc, Nylon, parabens, pesticides who wants this on the face?
INGREDIENTS: Talc, Magnesium Myristate, Nylon-12, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, EthylhexylPalmitate, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Methylparaben, Lauroyl Lysine, Propylparaben, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Butylparaben, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Tocopherol, Methicone. May contain: Ultramarines (Cl 77007), Iron Oxides (Cl 77491, Cl 77492, Cl 77499).
I don't recommend Ilia face powder since it contains a controversial ingredient: mica.
INGREDIENTS: Active: Non-nano Zinc Oxide 14Purpose: Sunscreen Inactive: Mica, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch*, Zinc Stearate, Kaolin, Sunflower Oil*, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Leaf, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf*, Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract, Leuconostoc/radish Root Ferment Filtrate.
Mica is linked to child labor, often it takes place in developing countries that may rely on exploitative practices. Plus mica can contain heavy metals.
I don't recommend Toups & Co Liquid Foundation because it contains: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891)
It has a great formulation. I wish they didn't add titanium dioxide.
INGREDIENTS: Mica, Non-nano Zinc Oxide, Non-nano Titanium Dioxide, Magnesium Stearate, Iron Oxides
