Organic Lice Shampoo

Recent research has demonstrated that lice are growing resistant to pesticide treatments containing permethrin and pyrethrins – dubbed “super lice.” The resistance is widespread across the United States. Growing resistance adds another reason to think twice about choosing permethrin and pyrethrin-based lice treatments.

Conventional Lice Shampoos 

Avoid conventional lice treatments made with toxic ingredients harmful to you and nature. They usually are full of toxic chemicals that are unsafe for us with their collateral toxic effects, and the environment, in fact, puts at risk other creatures such as honeybees and aquatic life.

❌ Permethrin: A synthetic chemical pesticide linked to seizures, and potential physiological and behavioral changes. Orally, permethrin is considered a likely carcinogen by the EPA. More research is needed on carcinogenicity when exposed through the skin. When mixed with DEET, permethrin exhibits greater neurotoxic effects than when it or DEET are used alone. Permethrin is toxic to fish, aquatic life, and bees.

❌ Pyrethrins: A mix of 6 chemicals found naturally in chrysanthemum flowers. However, being naturally-occurring does not make pyrethrins necessarily safe. Limited research has linked pyrethrins to endocrine disrupting effects. Pyrethrins may also be associated with the development of allergic sensitization, and if you are allergic to ragweed, exposure can cause difficulty breathing or an asthmatic attack. In multiple cases, exposure to pyrethrins and pyrethroids (the class of pesticides to which pyrethrins belong) through in-home use products like flea shampoos for pets has led to death. Pyrethrins are also toxic to aquatic life and bees

❌ Piperonyl Butoxide: A synergist designed to enhance the effectiveness and longevity of permethrin or pyrethrins. Piperonyl butoxide may be associated with endocrine-disrupting effects, and is part of the EU’s Endocrine Disruption Priority List. Piperonyl butoxide may be linked to toxicity to neurological development.

Greenwashing Lice Shampoos 

Avoid Greenwashing eye creams made by brands that pretend to be organic, eco-friendly, natural, or safe when they are not. They use misleading greenwashing techniques to convince you to buy their products!

They may contain controversial ingredients such as:

❌ Phenoxyethanol: preservative classified as an irritant, toxic, and harmful. Can have adverse effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems, linked to allergic contact uritica and dermatitis. Made by the reaction of corrosive phenol with carcinogen ethylene oxide. Exposure to phenoxyethanol has been linked to reactions ranging from eczema[2] to severe, life-threatening allergic reactions.[3] Infant oral exposure to phenoxyethanol can acutely affect nervous system function.[4]

❌ Disodium EDTA

❌ Polysorbate 20: A significant safety concern is potential contamination with 1,4-dioxane, a byproduct of the ethoxylation process used in manufacturing polysorbate 20

❌ Fragrance: Known human immune system toxicant or allergen, causes allergic contact dermatitis, causes skin allergies in children, exacerbates asthma, has high acute toxicity to aquatic life. Hormone disruption, reproductive issues (hides 3,000+ chemicals)
