Organic Shampoo Bars

Conventional Shampoo Bars

Avoid conventional shampoo bars made by large corporations that have only profit as they main goal. They sell cheaply made products using synthetic and toxic ingredients.

Here is why I don’t use conventional shampoo, they are made of harsh cleaning agents, carrying agents, additives, fragrances, and harsh preservatives.

❌ Toxic Cleaning agents: contain synthetic and chemical surfactants such as Cocamide, PEGs- (SLES), (SLS).

❌ Toxic Carrying agents: are the base of shampoo and are the active ingredients. Don’t use a shampoo with the carrying agent propylene glycol: it causes dermatitis and it is rated 3 on ewg.org

Toxic Emulsifiers: they are added to create the consistency of shampoo. Toxic emulsifiers are MEA, DEA, TEA, and MIPA, and ingredients with PEG-n are considered carcinogenic.

❌ Toxic Emollients: they keep the hair moisturized. Toxic emollients are silicones such as dimethicone. They coat hair and they are polluting since they do not biodegrade.

❌ Toxic Humectants: they give a more full look to the hair. Irritating humectants are butylene glycol, propylene glycol, and ethylene glycol.

❌ Toxic Preservatives: the worst preservatives are Parabens, Dioxane, and Benzyl Alcohol

❌ Fragrance: is added to mask the toxic smell of conventional shampoo. These unnatural fragrances are strong and can create allergic reactions, dermatitis, respiratory distress, and potential effects on the reproductive system.

Greenwashing Shampoo Bars

With an increase in plastic-free product demand, many companies are quickly responding with their plastic-free versions. While it is great that they are actually polluting less, we need to also read their content. Just because it is plastic-free, it doesn’t mean that is made with safer ingredients.

Avoid greenwashing shampoo bars that pretends to be sustainable or friendly when they are not!

❌ It is not enough to be plastic-free while still packing fragrances, colorants, titanium dioxide, unsustainable palm oil (responsible for deforestation and human rights abuse), preservatives and other pollutants, controversial and harsh ingredients inside their eco-friendly plastic-free packaging!
If you really want to offer a sustainable product, then don’t use the plastic-free trick and start honestly selling a truly eco-friendly product inside and out!

❌ Ethylhexylglycerin: a preservative classified as an irritant, this substance causes serious eye damage. Severe eye damage was observed in animal testing. Liver effects observed at low doses in repeat-dose studies in rats. This substance is harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Highly relevant, sensitizer in ‘hypo-allergenic’ cosmetics. To report on 13 patients who presented with allergic contact dermatitis caused by ethylhexylglycerin.

❌ Phenoxyethanol: preservative classified as an irritanttoxic, and harmful. It can have adverse effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems, linked to allergic contact uritica and dermatitis. Made by the reaction of corrosive phenol with carcinogen ethylene oxide. Exposure to phenoxyethanol has been linked to reactions ranging from eczema to severe, life-threatening allergic reactions. Infant oral exposure to phenoxyethanol can acutely affect nervous system function.
