Most commercial fragrances that occupy the shelves of major retail stores and are at the center of well-paid celebrity commercials, made by major brands, are considered allergens, endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, and are generally toxic. Instead of fulfilling the purpose of fragrance by enriching our senses, these conventional toxic fragrances are disconnecting our sense of smell, numbing senses, poisoning our bodies, infiltrating our lungs and skin, and causing adverse reactions.

Today the major of perfumes are formulated and collected in laboratories,  lab-made, and manufactured with industrial shortcuts using cheaply made toxic chemicals. 🔬

FDA doesn’t require a brand to disclose what’s in “fragrance”. So avoid products when they list fragrance on their label.

According to the FDA, Fragrance can even hide phthalates: “The regulations do not require the listing of the individual fragrance ingredients; therefore, the consumer will not be able to determine from the ingredient declaration if phthalates are present in a fragrance.”

Fragrance in products must be regulated!!

Conventional Body Spray

Avoid any product, including skincare if they contain the word “fragrance” or “parfum” on the label. 

❌ “Fragrance” or “parfum” on a label is an undisclosed mix of chemicals. FDA doesn’t require a brand to disclose its composition. It makes it nearly impossible to know what you’re getting. 

👩‍🔬 According to EWG the word “fragrance” or “parfum” on the product label represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals. Fragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress, and potential effects on the reproductive system! It is not required that manufacturers disclose fragrance ingredients. The International Fragrance Association has a list of over 3,000 ingredients found in fragrance mixes. They are associated with allergic reactions, cancer, and endocrine disruption, and are potentially dangerous to fertility and to an unborn child.

❌ Denatured Harsh alcohols: derived from petroleum or wheat, denatured with diethyl phthalate, a potent hormone disruptor.

❌Chemicals: phthalates, parabens,  synthetic fragrances.

Fragrance in conventional laundry products 

❌ Avoid Laundry or cleaning products that list fragrances on their label. Fragrance in laundry products is also a health hazard: Scented laundry products release carcinogens, study finds. 🌿 Choose always organic laundry products.

Greenwashing Body Spray

❌ “Natural fragrance” Since the word “natural” is not regulated by U.S. law, if the brands don’t disclose what is in it, they may have something to hide! You could still find unsafe ingredients such as solvents, pesticides, and preservatives conventionally found inside synthetic fragrances.

❌ Hydrogenated Oils: They have chemically altered versions of natural oils. In fact, they can be only one molecule away from plastic!

❌ Safe Synthetics: Synthetic ingredients are lab-made and petrochemical-sourced ingredients! 👉Example: Benzyl acetate according to safety data sheet: 🔎Hazard Statements Causes skin irritation Causes serious eye irritation May cause respiratory irritation. Synthetic fragrances even if they claim to be safe are still synthetic. 

❌ Nature-identical or reconstituted: chemically-created or adulterated ingredients designed to mimic the odor and molecular structure of natural extracts, but they are not derived from nature itself.

Organic Body Spray

The Law ​

The first step to consumer protection, and not towards companies’ profit.
To prevent companies from continuing to serve us toxic, undisclosed secrets packed in fancy glass bottles, California stepped in on this fight with the 𝘾𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙖 𝘾𝙤𝙨𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙘 𝙁𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙁𝙡𝙖𝙫𝙤𝙧 𝙄𝙣𝙜𝙧𝙚𝙙𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙍𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙆𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝘼𝙘𝙩 of 2019 (SB 312 – Leyva), signed into law in October of 2020, to require cosmetics companies to publicly disclose toxic fragrance and flavor ingredients present in beauty and personal care products sold in the state.

• In September 2020, California enacted a landmark law banning 24 of the most harmful chemicals in personal care products. In June, Maryland enacted a similar law, barring the sale and manufacture of cosmetics and personal care products with certain ingredients, including the toxic “forever chemicals” known as PFAS.

• In February, California Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) introduced Assembly Bill 2771 to ban PFAS from cosmetics and other personal care products sold in California.

Cosmetic Fragrance and Flavor Ingredient Right to Know Act

⚠️ No state or federal law currently requires the disclosure of fragrance or flavor ingredients to consumers or regulatory agencies. This loophole allows dozens – sometimes even hundreds – of chemicals to hide under the word “fragrance”☣️🔬

👩‍🔬All are at risk of exposure to secret hazardous fragrance and flavor chemicals and related harmful chronic health concerns, particularly vulnerable populations such as children, communities of color, and pregnant women. 

That’s why :

👉 California SB 312, also known as the Cosmetic Fragrance and Flavor Ingredient Right to Know Act of 2020, was signed into law on 1 October by Governor Gavin Newsom.

👉 From January 1, 2022: 👉SB 312 requires the public disclosure of hazardous fragrance and flavor chemicals in beauty and personal care products sold in California.

👉Specifically, SB 312 requires companies that sell beauty or personal care products in California to report fragrance or flavor ingredients which appear on designated authoritative hazard lists to the California Safe Cosmetics Program, who will then make this information available through their publicly accessible Safe Cosmetics Database.

👉SB 312 does not ban any chemicals or require additional product labeling.

👉Under California SB 312 manufacturers in California state are required to disclose a specific list of chemicals to the Division of Environmental and Occupational Disease Control within the State Department of Public Health.
