Avoid conventional swimwear made with plastic, synthetic materials that are petroleum-derived. They are new nylon and polyester. One synthetic swimsuit can release up to 70,000 microplastic fibers during washing.
Conventional swimwear is a surprising source of microplastics. If you have sensitive skin, synthetic blends can be more irritating than natural fibers, especially when wet and rubbed for long periods.
❌ Synthetic plastic: Nylon-spandex and polyester-spandex blends are the main materials in conventional swimwear. They shed microplastics into oceans and humans creating microplastics which then get our skin, or inhalation and by getting into our food chain once they enter our waterways during washing.
❌ PFAS exposure: If a suit is treated for water repellency or stain resistance, it may include PFAS, which do not break down easily and can spread through water and air.
❌ Polyester/nylon blends: common in mainstream swimsuits; they are plastic-based and shed microfibers during wear and washing.
❌ Chemical finishes: silicone softeners, synthetic scent coatings, and optical brighteners. trace metals, formaldehyde, aromatic amines, or other textile chemicals, depending on manufacturing and testing.
❌ Azo dyes: can be used in swimwear, mainly for color and prints, especially in dyed textile components that sit against skin.
❌ Heavy metals may enter through colored dyes, metal-based pigments, or contamination during production of synthetic fabrics like nylon or polyester.
Avoid Greenwashing swimwear made by brands that pretends to be green, sustainable, and responsible when they are not. They may still use polluting materials and controversial processes or manufacturing.
They use misleading marketing claims to motivate you to sell their products. They may still use polluting practices, polluting materials, controversial processes, or unkown manufactory protocols.

The best swimwear are made with plastic-free, natural fabric, biodegradable materials with increased the durability of the textiles, to cut the microplastic pollution.

Fashion Nova includes California Proposition 65 (Prop 65) warnings on many products due to potential exposure to chemicals like lead, cadmium, and phthalates in synthetic fabrics such as polyester and spandex.
Fashion Nova can expose [consumers] to Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, lead and cadmium,” according to the language on the tag tucked inside its Water Sports Bikini. Those chemicals, the small “warning” tag further states, “are known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, and other reproductive harm.”

I don't recommend Bromelia swimwear
Even if they are made in LA, they are made with synthetic materials
I would like to see a self-proclaimed "eco-friendly" swimwear brand like Bromelia Swimwear not rely on synthetic fabrics to make their garments, but choose more sustainable options.
I would like to see higher-quality, natural, and plastic-free materials like organic cotton, hemp, and merino wool when I see brands like Bromelia charging higher prices ($100–$200+ per piece) for a material that is ultimately still plastic only because it is made in LA, not because of the quality of their material.
I would like to see at least recycled (even though they are still made with cheap plastic, but at least more sustainable and/or PFAS-free claims.
Hopefully customers' demands will urge brands to make this switch!
