Organic Laundry Stain Removers
Many of us do not realize how toxic our daily household detergents can be!
They contain chemicals, irritants, and pollutants that affect not only sensitive individuals, pregnant women, the elderly, pets, children, and wildlife, but all of us, too! Yet, they are sold in regular grocery stores as harmless products.
Conventional laundry detergents and dryer sheets contain toxic ingredients and chemicals that are cheap to produce, harsh on us, the planet, and the environment. They are linked with asthma and respiratory damage, skin allergies and irritations, development and reproductive toxicity, posing cancer and environmental hazards. You can check your current detergent's toxicity rating here at EWG.org
When someone is wearing a garment that has been washed with a conventional detergent, I can recognize it right away from its typical toxic fragrance. I can even smell this toxic mix of chemicals that comes from home laundry rooms when I walk by on the sidewalk. Dryer sheet pollutants contaminate the air around us and reach long distances through the vent of the dryer. Read here.
Organic Laundry Stain Removers
Do you know that daily household products can be irritating and polluting? You can check the safety rating of your cleansing products at ewg.org/guides/cleaners. The majority of “antibacterial” products contain hazardous chemicals listed under "active ingredients.” They can have corrosive, flammable substances, they can potentially burn skin, eyes, and lungs. Look out for the pesticide “triclosan,” toxic for fish and wildlife! Yes, my vegan, environmentalist, and animal friends! 💖👩🔬According to ewg.org: "On a cleaning product, the word “natural” or “organic” can mean anything or nothing at all – there is no regulation of the word’s use. Only products bearing the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s “Certified Organic” logo are legally bound to comply with that claim.
That’s why we need to have the right information that allows us to buy a better detergent to protect us, our family, pets, and the environment. Use your nose and eyes. Read the ingredients list. Avoid fragranced products and colored liquid products.
To be sure that it is really natural, pick a USDA Certified Organic detergent that guarantees it is made with at least 95% organic ingredients, produced in a rigorously eco-friendly way. NO GMOs, pesticides, or toxic ingredients are allowed. A USDA Certified Organic product protects us from conventional toxic brands and at the same time from deceiving greenwashing brands that pretend to be natural, but they are not! Not sure how a USDA Certified Organic Seal looks like? Look here.
🔎Even if Procter & Gamble tried to reduce the amount of the toxic and carcinogenic ingredient 1,4-dioxane in their Tide detergents, they have a long way to go.
Laundry detergent breakdown:
❌𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡: contain petroleum chemicals that are toxic and contaminate the groundwater! They often carry ingredients with developmental, endocrine, and/or reproductive system potential side effects and create acute aquatic toxicity. Plus their thick, plastic packaging is an eco hazard, along with their smelly, toxic fragrances that you can detect when you are anywhere near someone who has been using such products.
❌𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙣𝙬𝙖𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜: they may try to convince you that their product is eco-friendly, with their green packaging and false claims, such as “natural detergents” but they still contain toxic and unhealthy ingredients such as fragrances or ingredients that hurt the environment, such as palm oil, responsible for deforestation, human rights abuse and animal orangutan extinction
✅𝙎𝙖𝙛𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙚𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙜𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨: USDA Certified Organic, which guarantees the product is safer for us and the environment, with at least 95% organic ingredients of agricultural origin. In order to be certified USDA, they have to meet the strictest standard for production, handling, processing, and labeling.
🐠Since many laundry detergent packaging is made with plastic containers that end up in the ocean and landfills, we need to choose 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘-𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙚 𝙖𝙡𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙨, like sugar cane resin bottles!🍃
💚There are a few natural brands that I recommend even if they don’t carry USDA certification.
Here are listed the safest laundry brands that I can recommend: a mix if my favorite USDA-certified organic laundry brands and the most eco-friendly packaging laundry brands
Now you have all you need to know for a safer, organic laundry experience. Wash your garments at home in your organic laundry detergent whenever is possible and when you need professional laundering to choose only eco-friendly dry cleaners that use the CO2 method.
