Fragranceย whatโ€™s in it?

๐ŸŒธ Fragrance has been a traditional part of our culture and daily life.
Our ancestors extracted fragrance from plants and flowers using simple but sophisticated techniques: extraction, infusion, and diffusion. With the industrial shortcuts and their cheaply made toxic chemicals, formulated and collected in laboratories, the traditional methods are almost lost.ย

โ€‹

๐Ÿ”ฌMost commercial fragrances that occupy the shelves of major retail stores and are at the center of well-paid celebrity commercials, made by major brands, are considered allergens, endocrine disruptors, carcinogens, and are generally toxic. Instead of fulfilling the purpose of fragrance by enriching our senses, these conventional toxic fragrances are disconnecting our sense of smell, numbing our senses, poisoning our bodies, infiltrating our lungs and skin, and causing adverse reactions.

According to the FDA,ย Fragrance can even hide phthalates: “The regulations do not require the listing of the individual fragrance ingredients; therefore, the consumer will not be able to determine from the ingredient declaration if phthalates are present in a fragrance.”โ€‹

Fragrance to avoid:

Avoid any products containing the word fragrance on the label.ย

โŒย โ€œFragranceโ€ on a label is an undisclosed mix of chemicals. FDA doesnโ€™t require a brand to disclose its composition.

ย It makes it nearly impossible to know what youโ€™re getting. Thatโ€™s why I recommend never using fragrances.ย

โŒย Hydrogenated Oils: They are chemically altered versions of natural oils. In fact, they can be only one molecule away from plastic!

FRAGRANCE IN PRODUCTS MUST BE REGULATED!!

IT IS ENOUGH TO HIDE THEIR TOXIC SECRETS UNDER UNDISCLOSED โ€œTRADE SECRETโ€

IT IS UP TO US TO LEAVE FRAGRANCED PRODUCTS ON THE STOREโ€™S SHELVES!!ย

Fragrance types:

โŒ๐™๐™ค๐™ญ๐™ž๐™˜ ๐™›๐™ง๐™–๐™œ๐™ง๐™–๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š: According to EWG, the word โ€œfragranceโ€ or โ€œparfumโ€ on the product label represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals.
๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ”ฌFragrance mixes have been associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress, and potential effects on the reproductive system!
It is not required that manufacturers disclose fragrance ingredients.
The International Fragrance Association has a list of over 3,000 ingredients found in fragrance mixes. They are associated with allergic reactions, cancer, endocrine disruption, and are potentially dangerous to fertility and to an unborn child.

โŒ๐™‚๐™ง๐™š๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฌ๐™–๐™จ๐™๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™œ ๐™›๐™ง๐™–๐™œ๐™ง๐™–๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š: โ€œNatural fragranceโ€ since the word โ€œnaturalโ€ is not regulated by U.S. law, if the brands donโ€™t disclose what is in it, they may have something to hide! You could still find unsafe ingredients such as solvents, pesticides, and preservatives conventionally found inside synthetic fragrances.

โœ…๐™Ž๐™–๐™›๐™š๐™ง ๐™›๐™ง๐™–๐™œ๐™ง๐™–๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š: the safest alternative is JUST 100% essential oils, with no other ingredients in the mix. Some added ingredients are ok as long as they are safe and organic oils such as coconut oil or jojoba oil found in USDA Organic fragrances.

Essential oils: they are obtained via hydro-distillation or expression of one single part of the plant. For example, Lavender essential oil and lemon oil.

The first step to consumer protection and not towards companies’ profit.
To prevent companies from continuing to serve us toxic, undisclosed secrets packed in fancy glass bottles, California stepped in on this fight with the ๐˜พ๐™–๐™ก๐™ž๐™›๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฃ๐™ž๐™– ๐˜พ๐™ค๐™จ๐™ข๐™š๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™˜ ๐™๐™ง๐™–๐™œ๐™ง๐™–๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™๐™ก๐™–๐™ซ๐™ค๐™ง ๐™„๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™ง๐™š๐™™๐™ž๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ ๐™๐™ž๐™œ๐™๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™ค ๐™†๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฌ ๐˜ผ๐™˜๐™ฉ of 2019 (SB 312 โ€“ Leyva), signed into law in October of 2020, to require cosmetics companies to publicly disclose toxic fragrance and flavor ingredients present in beauty and personal care products sold in the state.

  • In September 2020,ย Californiaย enacted a landmark law banning 24 of the most harmful chemicals in personal care products. In June,ย Marylandย enacted a similar law, barring the sale and manufacture of cosmetics and personal care products with certain ingredients, including the toxic โ€œforever chemicalsโ€ known as PFAS.

  • In February, California Assemblymember Laura Friedman (D-Glendale) introducedย Assembly Bill 2771ย to ban PFAS from cosmetics and other personal care products sold in California.

Fragrance in laundry

Avoid Laundry or cleaning products that list fragrances on their label. Fragrance in laundry products is also a health hazard: Scented laundry products release carcinogens, study finds. Choose always organic laundry products

Fragrance in Candles
Avoid candles that list fragrances on their label. You will also find the safest candles that use only disclosed therapeutic ingredientsย
