Konjac Sponges

Avoid Conventional Sponges

Avoid conventional Sponges which are man-made using toxic and polluting materials such as petroleum-derived.

Synthetic Sponges: made from materials like cellulose or polyurethane foam.  Synthetic sponges can take hundreds of years to decompose and contribute to long-term plastic pollution.

Conventional plastic loofahs: can breed and hold bacteria for weeks.

Avoid Greenwashing Sponges

Avoid greenwashing sponges made by brands that pretend to be natural or eco-friendly when they are not. They may use marking tricks to convince you to buy their products.

Cellulose sponges: made from wood pulp: they are tree-derived trees, which means they are cutting trees for these. Cellulose sponges are prone to bacterial growth because they retain moisture, creating an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive. Although cellulose sponges are made from natural, biodegradable materials, their production process can still cause environmental pollution.

If you are choosing a cellulose sponge check that they are sourced from sustainable responsibly managed forests and tree farms, often using fast-growing species like eucalyptus and bamboo. Unlike synthetic sponges, sustainable cellulose sponges are biodegradable. They can decompose within 2-6 weeks in landfill conditions, breaking down naturally without leaving harmful microplastic residues.
