Avoid Conventional eye pillows that can contain harmful chemicals, petroleum, toxic and unhealthy materials, and consequently, they may have a chemical smell!
❌ Synthetic material: polyester, nylon, acrylic, spandex, rayon, or polyamide. They are all petroleum-derived! These clothes release 9MILLION plastic microfibers into the ocean every time we wash them. They make up 35% of the primary microplastics found in the oceans! 🌎
❌ Synthetic Satin: is made from polyester or nylon, which are synthetic polymers derived from petroleum. Created to look like silk at a low cost.
❌ Conventional Cotton is considered the world’s dirtiest crop due to its heavy use of pesticides. Conventional cotton requires farmers to purchase seeds every year from AG chemical companies like Monsanto. 🌎 Conventional cotton is considered the dirtiest crop in the world, with its 16% insecticide and 7% pesticide use on the planet! You can reduce this environmental and social impact by choosing certified organic cotton.
Avoid Greenwashing pillows made by brands that pretend to be organic, green, natural, or sustainable when it is not! Even if they say natural or even organic without a certification is hard to prove it! That’s why I don’t recommend any brands not disclose or show their Organic Certification. These certifications are very rigorous and expensive, so not many want to go through that or can pass their strict requirements!
They may use natural materials, and they add controversial materials such as cooling gels, gel-filled, or Latex pillows mixed with other TOXIC ingredients, synthetic latex, or chemicals.
❌ Greenwashing Cotton: Even if they claim “organic” or “natural” cotton, if they don’t display the GOTS Certified seal, they may have something to hide. Avoid greenwashing, cotton of any kind. Any cotton brand without the Organic Certification seal is considered conventional = toxic.
❌ Recycled synthetic material: it still releases microplastics when washing
❌ Viscose AKA Rayon: Viscose Rayon is responsible for deforestation in Indonesia. Every year, 3.2 billion trees are cut down to make paper packaging or fabrics such as rayon and viscose. Viscose fabric is made from cellulose that’s been extracted from the bark, wood, or leaves of plants. It’s most often made from bamboo, pine, or eucalyptus trees. Viscose is used to make clothing (especially loungewear and activewear), sheets, and bedding. Viscose is toxic: chemicals are then used to break down cellulose so it can be spun into viscose, some of which are toxic. One of the most ubiquitous and dangerous is carbon disulfide.
❌ Bamboo viscose: Avoid Bamboo viscose, AKA Bamboo rayon. It is a bio-based semi-synthetic material created from cellulose fibers from bamboo. Even though bamboo is grown without pesticides, it is made into viscose, which requires toxic chemicals (carbon disulfide, solvents such as sodium hydroxide — a.k.a caustic soda) and a polluting process. Plus, it is mostly made in China! Therefore, bamboo viscose is greenwashing
❌ Avoid Modal: it requires toxic chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide to turn wood pulp into modal fibers. These substances can be hazardous to both workers and the environment. The majority is manufactured in China, and it is responsible for the deforestation of beach trees.
❌ Lyocell: Avoid Lyocell, as the processing also omits certain harmful chemicals altogether.
❌ Lenzing: Avoid Lenzing, it is a fiber production company based in Austria.
❌ Tencel: Avoid Tencel, it is Lenzing’s trademarked version of lyocell or modal yarn
❌ Controversial manufacturing: dresses made by exploiting child labor and in other unfair environments
They are made with organci material by approved and responsible brands that take extra steps to get certified:
✅ GOTS Certification: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the world’s leading processing standard for organic textiles and fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. GOTS requires that at least 95 percent of the materials in the mattress be certified organic, and it prohibits outright the use of certain substances, even for the other 5 percent, such as chemical flame retardants and polyurethane, the chief ingredient of memory foam. (This is for cotton, wool material used in the mattress)
✅ The Fair Trade Certified Factory: logo means these brands partner with Fair Trade Certified™ factories that provide safe working conditions, community support, and additional development funds to those working on-site.
🌿Here you will find the best organic and sustainable eye pillows made by responsible brands! Avoid supporting polluting brands that make conventional or greenwashing products made with toxic materials for their profits at the expense of our skin, planet, workers, and community. Organic cotton is commonly sourced from farms in the U.S. (North & South Carolina, Texas), India, and Pakistan. Organic cotton is the most expensive type of cotton and the rarest.
🍃By choosing only GOTS-certified organic, we are sending a clear message to the toxic and greenwashing cotton companies: their marketing strategies are not working with us. By supporting organic brands, we are reshaping the market for better and more responsible products. 🌎
