Non Comedogenic

Non-comedogenic refers to skincare and makeup products formulated to avoid clogging pores, helping prevent acne and blackheads, especially for oily or acne-prone skin.

Conventional Non-comedogenic Products

Conventional non-comedogenic products may contain toxic ingredients or additives like preservatives and contaminants that raise health concerns. These can include hormone disruptors

  • ❌ Parabens: methylparaben, propylparaben act as preservatives but mimic estrogen and link to endocrine issues or breast cancer risk.
  • Formaldehyde releasers: like DMDM hydantoin or quaternium-15 preserve products yet irritate skin and classify as carcinogens.
  • Phthalates: often unlabeled, in fragrances disrupt hormones and absorb easily.
  • PEG compounds: or triclosan used for solubility/antibacterial effects.
  • Fragrances: Known human immune system toxicant or allergen, causes allergic contact dermatitis, causes skin allergies in children, exacerbates asthma, has high acute toxicity to aquatic life.

Greenwashing Non-comedogenic Products

Avid greenwashing pimple treatments that pretend to be natural, safer, and organic when they are not.

Labels claim “non-comedogenic,” but the FDA doesn’t regulate it strictly—verify ingredients via lists or online checkers, as individual reactions vary. Non-comedogenic differs from “oil-free,” as some oils are safe.

They may contain natural ingredients mixed with controversial or harsh ingredients such as:

  • ❌ Mineral oil or silicones: like dimethicone may appear “non-comedogenic” but derive from petroleum, potentially irritating sensitive skin.
  • ❌ Ethylhexylglycerin: Harmonized classification: This substance causes serious eye damage. Severe eye damage observed in animal testing. Classified as an irritant, this substance causes serious eye damage. Severe eye damage was observed in animal testing. Liver effects observed at low doses in repeat-dose studies in rats. This substance is harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Ethylhexylglycerin: highly relevant, sensitizer in ‘hypo-allergenic’ cosmetics. To report on 13 patients who presented with allergic contact dermatitis caused by ethylhexylglycerin.
  • ❌ Phenoxyethanol: preservative classified as an irritant, toxic, and harmful. Can have adverse effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems, linked to allergic contact uritica and dermatitis. Made by the reaction of corrosive phenol with carcinogen ethylene oxide. Exposure to phenoxyethanol has been linked to reactions ranging from eczema[2] to severe, life-threatening allergic reactions.[3] Infant oral exposure to phenoxyethanol can acutely affect nervous system function.[4]
  • Pure coconut oil – contains more fatty acids. It’s generally considered a comedogenic oil.
  • Marula Oil: contains about 75% oleic acid. Oleic acid is a fatty acid that can be comedogenic in some cases. Small ratio with less than 10% oleic acid present from the addition of marula oil.
