Organic Cinnamon

Conventional Cinnamon

Avoid conventional cinnamon full of pesticides, and glyphosate and packed in plastic packing

Consuming too much cinnamon, particularly the common Cassia variety, carries several health risks due to its compounds and potential contaminants. “Conetnional cinnamon” likely refers to conventional (non-organic) cinnamon, which has been linked to issues like lead contamination in some products.

The two main types of cinnamon are:

  • Cassia: “regular” cinnamon, this is the most commonly used type.
  • Ceylon: “true” cinnamon, it has a lighter and less bitter taste.

Cassia cinnamon is more commonly found in supermarkets, given that it’s much cheaper than Ceylon cinnamon.

According to the FDA: Certain conventional cinnamon brands have tested positive for elevated lead levels, posing risks like developmental issues in children and long-term blood lead accumulation from regular use.

Consumer Reports found high lead levels in a third of the cinnamon powders and spice mixtures we tested. Here are the ones that pose the most and least risk.

Greenwashing Cinnamon

Avoid greenwashing cinnamon made by brands that pretends to be organic, safer, or healthier, when they are not. They will use their misleading marketing tricks to convince you to but their products.

Glyphosate (Roundup’s active ingredient) has been detected in some cinnamon samples, including organic ones, potentially from post-harvest drying sprays or environmental drift, at levels up to 50 parts per million in isolated tests.

One brand tested over 1,200 parts per billion of lead, which means a single gram could exceed the daily warning limit by 140%.

After I discovered that a popular organic cinnamon brand carries the California Proposition 65 Warning,

Both Simply Organic Cinnamon versions have the warning!

WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including Lead and lead compounds which are known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov
