Oily Hair

If you have oily hair this page is for you! Here you will find the best organic shampoos for oily hair on the market! I listed the approved organic hair care brands that make organic shampoo and other hair care products for oily hair using the most natural and safer ingredients available.

These organic hair brands are dedicated to providing not only natural and organic shampoos for oily hair but also organic hair treatments and solutions for oily hair, all made with organic and certified organic ingredients.

To know if you are using conventional and greenwashing shampoos, check the ingredients:

Conventional Products for Oily Hair

Avoid conventional hair products for oily hair made with toxic emulsifiers, emollients, humectants, proteins, fragrances, and preservatives. Cleaning agents, toxic carriers, synthetic additives, fragrances, and irritant preservatives. Conventional shampoos’ synthetic ingredients strip the hair of oil, which causes your scalp to over-compensate by producing even more oil. Creating even more unnecessary washes that won’t resolve the issue.

Toxic Cleaning agents: contain synthetic and chemical surfactants such as Cocamide, PEGs- (SLES), (SLS).

Toxic Carrying agents: are the base of shampoo and are the active ingredients. Don’t use a shampoo with the carrying agent propylene glycol: it causes dermatitis and it is rated 3 on ewg.org

Toxic Emulsifiers: they are added to create the consistency of shampoo. Toxic emulsifiers are MEA, DEA, TEA, and MIPA, and ingredients with PEG-n are considered carcinogenic.

Toxic Emollients: they keep the hair moisturized. Toxic emollients are silicones such as dimethicone. They coat hair, and they are polluting since they do not biodegrade.

❌ Toxic Humectants:  they give a fuller look to the hair. Irritating humectants are butylene glycol, propylene glycol, and ethylene glycol.

Toxic Preservatives: the worst preservatives are Parabens, Dioxane, and Benzyl Alcohol

❌ Fragrance: is added to mask the toxic smell of conventional shampoo. These unnatural fragrances are strong and can create allergic reactions, dermatitis, respiratory distress, and potential effects on the reproductive system.

Greenwashing Shampoos for Oily Hair

Avoid greenwashing hair products made by brands that pretend to be “organic, sustainable, or natural” when they are not. They will use marketing tricks to convince you to buy their products. They may have green packaging to evoke nature while still using petroleum-derived or questionable ingredients. They may make claims that are not regulated, promising you safer ingredients when they are controversial:

❌ Ethylhexylglycerin: a preservative classified as an irritant, this substance causes serious eye damage. Severe eye damage was observed in animal testing. Liver effects observed at low doses in repeat-dose studies in rats. This substance is harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Highly relevant, sensitizer in ‘hypo-allergenic’ cosmetics. To report on 13 patients who presented with allergic contact dermatitis caused by ethylhexylglycerin.

❌ Phenoxyethanol: preservative classified as an irritanttoxic, and harmful. Can have adverse effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems, linked to allergic contact uritica and dermatitis. Made by the reaction of corrosive phenol with carcinogen ethylene oxide. Exposure to phenoxyethanol has been linked to reactions ranging from eczema to severe, life-threatening allergic reactions. Infant oral exposure to phenoxyethanol can acutely affect nervous system function.

I tried many shampoos on the market and here are my favorites organic shampoos for oily hair you can find other hair products for additional support and care.

  • Detoxing: You may experience a hair detox for several weeks if you’ve been using conventional hair products, especially with silicone derivatives. Your hair may feel knottier and dryer than usual during this detox period. After that, your hair will improve as these artificial chemicals are removed from your hair.
  • Clarifying: To help with the hair and scalp detoxing process it is recommended to clarify your hair naturally. Clarifying your hair is recommended to remove product buildup on the hair and scalp. It unclogs the follicles, improving scalp conditions such as oily hair, dandruff excess shedding, and hair loss. Clarifying Hair Rinse, listed below, will assist with stripping your hair of chemical residue, and Protect Hair Repair will help to detangle and smooth your hair. You can also add organic hair conditioner to support the process as these artificial chemicals are removed from your hair.
  • Dandruff: If you are dealing with dandruff, check my page for the best organic products and solutions for dandruff.
