Organic Self Tanner Brands

Here you can learn how to find the best organic self-tanner. Many of you have asked me for a recommendation for a good self-tanning brand!
⭐️Here is my tip on how to pick safer brands. First, you need to know what to avoid:

Conventional Self Tanners

There is no laws nor regulations enforced by the FDA to define the term “sunless tanner.”

Avoid Conventional Self Tanners: Their active ingredient is DHA, (Dihydroxyacetone) self-tanning’s most mysterious ingredient!

They also contain Synthetic Fragrances, Animal Derivatives, Synthetic Ingredients, Artificial Dyes, PEGS, Parabens, Phthalates, Sulphates, Petrochemicals, Propylene Glycol, SLS/SLES, Formaldehyde, and Aluminium.

Chemical Dihydroxyacetone (DHA): a color additive that darkens the skin by reacting with amino acids on the skin’s surface.

It is derived by the fermentation of glycerol, over the acetic acid bacteria, 1,3‐dihydroxyacetone (DHA; 1,3‐dihydroxy‐2‐propanone) a color additive that darkens the skin by reacting with amino acids on the skin’s surface.

⚠️This type of DHA is not only responsible for orange-colored stain results, but is associated with serious harm to your respiratory system, risks of asthma, and other side effects!
👉According to the FDA website: DHA is not permitted for use in the area of the eye or lips. ⚠️
The use of DHA in “tanning” booths as an all-over spray has not been approved by the FDA, since safety data to support this use has not been submitted to the Agency for review and evaluation. ⁉️
The FDA has received reports from consumers stating that they have experienced adverse events associated with sunless tanning, including rashes and, primarily in the case of spray tanning booths, coughing, dizziness, and fainting. ⚠️
The industry has not provided safety data to the FDA in order for the agency to consider approving it for using these exposure methods, including “misting” from tanning booths.⚠️

The active chemical used in spray tans, dihydroxyacetone (DHA), has the potential to cause genetic alterations and DNA damage

Synthetic Dyes: commonly used are such as Red No. 5 and Blue No. 7.

Fragrance: they add phthalate‐containing fragrance to mask the unpleasant smell that often characterizes sunless tanners.

Greenwashing Self Tanners

Avoid greenwashing self-tanners made by brands that parents to be organic, safer, or natural when they are not. They may use the natural and safer (DHA) but then they add other controversial ingredients to their formula such as:

❌ Ethylhexylglycerin: a preservative classified as an irritant, this substance causes serious eye damage. Severe eye damage was observed in animal testing. Liver effects observed at low doses in repeat-dose studies in rats. This substance is harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Highly relevant, sensitizer in ‘hypo-allergenic’ cosmetics. To report on 13 patients who presented with allergic contact dermatitis caused by ethylhexylglycerin.

❌ Phenoxyethanol: preservative classified as an irritanttoxic, and harmful. It can have adverse effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems, linked to allergic contact uritica and dermatitis. Made by the reaction of corrosive phenol with carcinogen ethylene oxide. Exposure to phenoxyethanol has been linked to reactions ranging from eczema to severe, life-threatening allergic reactions. Infant oral exposure to phenoxyethanol can acutely affect nervous system function.

Potassium Sorbate: preservative, human skin toxicant, or allergen – strong evidence. Causes serious eye irritation

Sodium Benzoate: preservative (Bio-accumulative and cancer-causing food preservative) Sodium benzoate: benzoic acid and vitamin C mix can cause cancer. Capable of causing contact urticaria

Organic Self Tanners

The approved Self Tanners are made by brands that use safer naturally derived DHA and organic ingredients! Synthetic-free, Dye-free, fragrance-free.

☀️When shopping for self-tanning products, read the label and spot this more natural, safer DHA version, which delivers a better, glowing color.

Natural DHA: Natural Sugar Cane Derived DHA, Sugar beet-derived DHA is considered the safest form of tanning over chemically-derived self-tanners and sun exposure, it creates a more naturally-looking tan, fades more evenly, than chemical tanners, and is now considered the most effective sunless tanning ingredient. The tan produced by DHA takes approximately 2-4 hours to appear on the skin and will not wash away due to sweat, water, or soap. The tan will fade gradually over the course of 3-10 days.

Natural & Organic Ingredients: The rest of the ingredients should be enriched with nourishing ingredients, such as certified organic jojoba oil, coconut oil, aloe vera, and essential oils.

Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate: approved preservative.
