HVAC Filter

What is an HVAC MERV rating?

MERV Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values report a filter’s ability to capture larger particles between 0.3 and 10 microns (µm). The higher the MERV rating the better the filter is at trapping specific types of particles.

HVAC Air Filters

Investing in a high-quality HVAC air filter with a MERV 13 or 14 rating significantly enhances the air quality throughout your home. These filters complement the performance of your approved air purifier. Additionally, they prolong the lifespan of your HVAC system, ensuring optimal performance for years to come.

HVAC Air Filters are designed to capture small airborne particles such as Pollen, Dust Mites, Pet Dander, Bacteria, Viruses, Allergens, and Mold Spores.

HVAC Air Filters for Wildfires

During wildfires is recommended to upgrade your HVAC filter to the highest possible. I still recommend to have in addition an HEPA air purifier around. For wildfire smoke protection, air purifiers with HEPA filters and activated carbon are highly effective.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends using air filters with a MERV 13 rating or higher for optimal protection against wildfire smoke.

During the fire season, it is recommended that upgrading to a filter rated MERV 13 or higher can be especially important during smoky periods to effectively remove fine particle pollution from smoke in the indoor air. A true high-efficiency filter (MERV 13–16) can remove as much as 95% of the airborne particles, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5) found in wildfire smoke.

For optimal protection, a combination of MERV 13+ filters in the HVAC system and portable HEPA air purifiers in key living areas can provide comprehensive coverage against wildfire smoke in a residential setting.

  • Keep windows closed and minimize outdoor air infiltration during wildfire events.
  • Turn the system to “recirculate” mode.

The Best HVAC Filters Ratings

If you have pets or allergies, MERV 11 is a great baseline. Homes with smokers or a wood-burning fireplace should pick MERV 12-13. MERV 14+ are generally for hospitals, schools, and environments with high air quality requirements.

✅ MERV rating 14 and E-11 material attracts and removes microscopic particles like dust, smoke, pet dander, pollen, and smog particles, removing them from the air you breathe.
