Conventional Baby Wipes

Avoid conventional baby wipes made with plastic, and other toxic materials or ingredients  such as:

  • ❌ Bleaching agent: conventional wipes are bleached with chlorine, sulfates, or other harsh chemicals. The residue from these bleaching agents causes skin irritation and environmental pollution.
  • ❌ Perfume & alcohol: toxic and irritant
  • ❌ Preservatives: Parabens, Methylisothiazolinone (MIT)
  • ❌ Conventional cotton: it is the world’s dirtiest crop and uses 16% of the world’s pesticides.
  • ❌ Ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane contaminants introduced during the manufacturing process
  • ❌ Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats): can trigger asthma or skin allergies in some people. Especially benzalkonium chloride which has been identified as risky by the California Department of Toxic Substance Control. Avoid: “quaternium” in the name followed by a number (such as quaternium-17), or “ . . . onium chloride” in the ingredient name (such as benzalkonium chloride).
  • PET Plastic wet wipes: (polyethylene terephthalate) are often used in plastic bottles and polyestertoxic and polluting, If a wipe doesn’t tell you what it’s made from, assume that it’s made from PET or polypropylene—and skip it.
Greenwashing Baby Wipes

Avoid greenwashing baby wipes that claim to be eco-friendly, organic, or safe when they contain controversial or toxic ingredients and polluting materials.

  • Preservatives: Phenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate
  • ❌ Ethylhexylglycerin: is derived from glycerine, obtained mainly from soybean or palm.
  • ❌ Non-biodegradable wipes: Incorrectly flushed or thrown away items are found polluting the coastlines across the world.

Homemade Wet Baby Wipes Recipe

Making your baby wipes at home allows you to be in control of what you are putting on your baby’s skin, control the freshness of the products, avoid any preservatives, avoid tossing expired wipes, monitor the use of liquid parts to avoid product waste, and it will also save money and energy from shipping dry wipes versus water-wet wipes.

Here is how to quickly and easily make your own:

Add water at home to make your own!

  • Take a handful of organic cotton dry wipes out of the box (a few days’ worth), and place them into a glass or stainless steel container. (avoid plastic)

  • Mix 1c distilled or boiling water, 1 tbsp Earth Mama Castile Soap, and 1 tbsp Calendula Baby Oil. Slowly pour filtered water onto the dry wipes so they are saturated with water.

  • The best way to store any extra wipes, put them in a cool, dry place, away from the sun. Note that homemade wipes only last a few days, depending on how you store them.

  • To bring them on the go, put these organic homemade wet wipes with you on the go, in a silicone bag, and make sure the bag is closed well. My favorite silicone bag not made in China is Zip Top

🍃Baby wipes listed here are the safest and most eco-conscious choices for your baby’s skin, the planet, and the environment!
