It is so challenging to find spices without all the contamination or California Proposition 65 warning. Even many popular organic spice brands do carry the CA Prop 65 warning for detected lead or other heavy metals. The challenge is finding a supplier that sources their spices in lead-contaminated lands; many plants are naturally more prone to gather heavy metals from the ground! Same for coffee and chocolate; many brands sell them anyway without bothering to search for better suppliers other go above and beyond to avoid this risk.
I admire these kinds of brands that take extra steps to ensure their products are safer and healthier, and that are the brands I want to support! Like these ones listed on this page!
The spice trade is very dirty. The industry is totally under-regulated.
Avoid conventional spice brands made by manufacturers that clean and process their spices using harsh chemicals that can be harmful to health and detrimental to flavor:
❌ Avoid greenwashing spices made by brands that pretends to be organic, safer, or healthier, when they are not. They will use their misleading marketing tricks to convince you to but their products.
Glyphosate (Roundup’s active ingredient) has been detected in some cinnamon samples, including organic ones, potentially from post-harvest drying sprays or environmental drift, at levels up to 50 parts per million in isolated tests. One brand tested over 1,200 parts per billion of lead, which means a single gram could exceed the daily warning limit by 140%.
