Lighting

Conventional Lighting

The large majority of lighting comes from outside the country, using questionable materials, working conditions, processes, and protocols. They are cheaply and quickly made to satisfy the greedy requirements of the brand that is going to sell in the USA for profit at the expense of the workers, forests, environment, and your wallet.

This toxic and unsustainable lighting is manufactured abroad in faraway factories, often lacking in quality, controls, and ethical labor practices, and creating a polluting environment.

Avoid conventional toxic lighting materials concerns focus on legacy technologies (fluorescent lamps with mercury, ballasts with PCBs/lead, and certain flame retardants) and, to a lesser extent, some components in older LEDs, though LEDs are generally less hazardous during use.

  • Fluorescent lamps: contain mercury vapor, phosphor coatings, and small amounts of other metals. If broken or improperly disposed of, mercury can contaminate air, water, and soil, posing neurotoxic risks, particularly to children and developing fetuses.

Greenwashing Lighting

Avoid Greenwashing lighting made by brands that pretend to be “non-toxic, organic, eco-friendly, or safe” when they are not. They use misleading greenwashing techniques, tactics, and claims to convince you to buy their products!

  • ❌ Claim to be “eco‑friendly,” “safe,” or “non‑toxic” without clear definitions, test data, or standards to back them up.
  • ❌ Advertising low mercury, recycled plastic, or “energy saving” while ignoring other impacts, such as short product life, toxic flame retardants, or difficult end‑of‑life recycling.
