There are a few powerful individuals who take advantage of something that is shared with the rest of humanity for their own interest, and that is the planet! 🌎
They make cheap products, made with toxic materials, pollute the environment, exploit the labor, and then sell these to us!
While there are those brands, including the designer’s ones, who keep intoxicating us and polluting the world, it is up to us not to feed this unsustainable system.
Full of pesticides and toxic chemicals. It doesn’t matter how stylish or expensive it is! Or who the designer is, even if it is considered luxury with a premium price, if they don’t respect our skin, the workers, and the environment, it is not luxury, sexy, or attractive.
🌎 10.5 million tons of textile waste end up in the landfill every year, just in the USA!
Conventional shirts can be made with many different materials. The irresponsible manufacturer produces their clothing using toxic, polluting, synthetic, and cheap materials to increase their profit at the expense of their customers’ health and the environment.
🌟Let’s reduce waste, let’s buy better quality clothes! Don’t follow the fashion, but make your own!
Avoid conventional shirts made with toxic dyes and cheap material, often synthetic and petroleum-derived.
❌ Conventional Cotton: Avoid conventional cotton of any kind. 🌎 Conventional cotton is considered the dirtiest crop in the world, with its 16% insecticide and 7% pesticide use on the planet! 🔎𝘾𝙤𝙩𝙩𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙨 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙’𝙨 𝙙𝙞𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙥. ⚠️Roundup Ready Cotton (RR Cotton) has been genetically modified to survive the herbicide weapon called glyphosate Roundup. The glyphosate rate of application per crop year has tripled on cotton farms.
❌ Synthetic clothes: They are made of polyester, nylon, acrylic, spandex, rayon, or polyamide. These clothes release 9 MILLION plastic microfibers into the ocean every time we wash them. They make up 35% of the primary microplastics found in the oceans!
Avoid Greenwashing shirts made by brands that pretend to be sustainable, or eco-friendly when they are not. They will try to convince the products are somehow green without proving it. They claim to be organic without certification. It doesn’t matter how big or luxurious their brand is, or if it is a designer line, if it is not made with responsible materials in fair production, there is nothing sexy here.
❌ Greenwashing Cotton: Even if they claim “organic” or “natural” cotton, if they don’t display the GOTS Certified seal, they may have something to hide.
❌ Recycled synthetic material: it still releases microplastics when washing
❌ Avoid Bamboo viscose AKA Bamboo rayon: It is a bio-based semi-synthetic material created from cellulose fibers from bamboo. Even though bamboo is grown without pesticides, it is made into viscose, which requires toxic chemicals (carbon disulfide, solvents such as sodium hydroxide — a.k.a caustic soda) and a polluting process. Plus, it is mostly made in China! Therefore, bamboo viscose is greenwashing
❌ Avoid Modal: it requires toxic chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and carbon disulfide to turn wood pulp into modal fibers. These substances can be hazardous to both workers and the environment. The majority is manufactured in China, and it is responsible for the deforestation of beach trees.
❌ Avoid Lyocell: its processing also omits certain harmful chemicals altogether.
❌ Avoid Tencel: Tencel is Lenzing’s trademarked version of lyocell or modal yarn
🌎 It takes 713 gallons of water to make a non-organic shirt. 713 gallons of water are enough for a person to drink for 900 days. The water consumption of organic cotton is 91% lower than conventional cotton. You can reduce this environmental and social impact by choosing certified organic cotton.
Less than 1% of the world’s cotton is organic.
✅ The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain.
The standard covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading, and distribution of all textiles made from certified organic natural fibers.
The aim of the standard is to ensure the organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing, up to labeling.
🍃 GOTS Certification also certifies the product does not have toxic heavy metals, pesticides, GMOs, chlorine bleaching, toxic dyes, PVC (all things that conventional cotton has 🙈🙊).
🍃It also certifies that the production has respected ecological rules on waste, water use, disposal, and protection of the environment, that it has followed rules that respect the workers, and finally, protection for the consumer’s health.
✅ The Fair Trade Certified Factory: logo means these brands partner with Fair Trade Certified™ factories that provide safe working conditions, community support, and additional development funds to those working on-site.
I listed here the best GOTS-certified organic shirt brands for women
🌟Their cotton is superior, more resistant, and incredibly soft, compared to conventional cotton! Their cotton will last you much longer than cheaper conventional options.
🍃By choosing only GOTS Certified organic, we are sending a clear message to the toxic and greenwashing cotton companies: their marketing strategies are not working with us. By not supporting their brands, we are reshaping the market for better and more responsible products. 🌎
