Organic Protein Powder

Conventional Protein Powder

Avoid Conventional Protein Powders made with preservatives, dyes, or gums, artificial ingredients such as artificial flavors, and heavy metals. Protein powders can have surprisingly high levels of heavy metals and chemicals like glyphosate. That means they expose you to unhealthy and unsafe chemicals!

They are mass‑market, flavored, or heavily processed products.

  • ❌ Heavy metals: such as lead, arsenic and sometimes mercury, primarily because these elements occur naturally in soil and water and can be taken up by crops or introduced during processing. These metals accumulate over time and are linked to risks for neurological, kidney, cardiovascular, and reproductive health, even at low chronic doses.
  • ❌ Glyphosate: it is the active ingredient in herbicides like Roundup, it has been detected in some protein powders, especially plant‑based ones such as pea, rice, hemp, and other grain‑based proteins
  • ❌ Artificial additives: Artificial sweeteners and flavors (e.g., aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame K, artificial flavor “blends”) that can trigger gut issues, blood‑sugar spikes, or long‑term metabolic concerns.
  • ❌ Added sugars and calories. Some protein powders have little added sugar, and others have a lot (as much as 23 grams per scoop)
  • ❌ Hidden fillers and gums: inorganic thickeners, unlisted excipients can introduce more heavy‑metal risk or digestive irritation, especially when sourcing is not transparent.

Greenwashing Protein Powders

Avoid greenwashing protein powders made by brands that pretend to be organic, natural, or safer when they are not. They use their misleading marketing tricks to convince you to buy their products. Protein powders tend to have the California Proposition 65 Warning, including natural and even USDA Certified Organic ones.

Even if it is made with natural ingredients, a product is still potentially unsafe and toxic since it can contain heavy metals found in nature, such as lead and arsenic. That’s why we need to check for the California Proposition 65 Warning before buying a product, even if it is considered natural or organic!

  • CA Prop 65 warning: Organic products, while free of synthetic pesticides, can still show higher average lead and cadmium because they may use soil‑rich production methods or sourcing from regions with naturally metal‑rich soils.

  • ❌  Chocolate‑flavored powders: often have more lead than vanilla or unflavored versions, likely because cocoa and certain flavoring ingredients can carry more soil‑derived metals.

  • Lead in Organic brands: Consumer Report  found that nearly all the plant-based products CR tested had elevated lead levels, but some were particularly concerning.

Organic Protein Powders

If you want to consume organic, clean protein powders without heavy metal contaminants, then this page is for you! On this page are listed only the safest protein powders on the market. They are made with Organic ingredients AND without the heavy metals warning!

🌿 Grass‑fed or “glyphosate‑free” whey brands often test their products specifically for glyphosate and heavy metals, marketing them as cleaner options.

Choosing brands that explicitly test for glyphosate and publish third‑party lab results

Made without GMOs, fertilizers, synthetic pesticides, or sewage water.

Prioritize brands that publish third‑party heavy‑metal testing and show lead below 0.5 μg per serving and low cadmium/arsenic

They also meet my criteria for clean protein powder:

  • ✅ USDA Certified Organic
  • ✅ No California Proposition 65 Warning
