Organic Dish Soap

The Best Organic Dish Soap

Many of us do not realize how toxic conventional dishwashing detergents can be!

They contain chemicals, irritants, and pollutants that affect not only sensitive individuals, pregnant women, the elderly, pets, children, and wildlife, but all of us, too! Yet, they are sold in regular grocery stores as harmless products. Avoid fragranced products and colored liquid products.

Conventional Dish Soaps

Conventional dishwasher detergents contain toxic ingredients and chemicals that are cheap to produce, and harsh on us, the planet, and the environment. They are linked with asthma and respiratory damage, skin allergies and irritations, development, and reproductive toxicity, posing cancer, and environmental hazards.

To keep our house a healthy place, we need to ditch conventional cleaning products and use natural ones!
Besides many popular brands such as CloroxAjaxLysolMr. CleanArm & HammerUp&UpWindex, there are many “greenwashing” products around.

  • ❌ Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate: Suspected to be an environmental toxin
  • Methylisothiazolinone: synthetic preservative, The US EPA reports the LC50 value is very toxic to aquatic life.  Preservative skin sensitizer, linked to allergies, lung, neurological, and organ toxicity. Plus it is very toxic to aquatic life. Found in BetterLife Brand! Check at the bottom of the page the greenwashing brands.

  • Benzisothiazolinone: synthetic preservative, toxic,  is not anaerobically degradable. Skin sensitizer.

Greenwashing Dish Soaps

Avoid greenwashing    dish soap made by brands that pretend to be organic, natural or better or safer when they are not. They will use their misleading marketing tricks to convince you to buy their products.

Many “natural dish soaps” contain controversial ingredients mixed in their almost natural formula such as preservatives, dyes, fragrances, surfactants, bleach, alcohol, quats, or any other harmful chemicals.

These companies are filling their “natural” products with synthetic petrochemicals, oleochemical emollients, thickeners, detergents, fragrances, and preservatives.

  • ❌ Phenoxyethanol: preservative classified as an irritant, toxic, and harmful. Can have adverse effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems, linked to allergic contact uritica and dermatitis. Made by the reaction of corrosive phenol with carcinogen ethylene oxide. Exposure to phenoxyethanol has been linked to reactions ranging from eczema[2] to severe, life-threatening allergic reactions.[3] Infant oral exposure to phenoxyethanol can acutely affect nervous system function.[4]
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) can irritate skin, especially for those with eczema, rosacea, or sensitivity, causing redness, dryness, or itching at concentrations as low as 0.5% in patch tests. It’s deliberately used in dermatology to induce irritation for research. Debate persists on biodegradability; some studies show toxicity to aquatic life at high levels. The toxicity of SLS depends largely on the marine species, water hardness, and water temperature.,,
  • ❌ Sodium Benzoatepreservative (Bio-accumulative and cancer-causing food preservative)
Sodium benzoate: benzoic acid and vitamin C mix can cause cancer. Capable of causing contact urticaria. Increase the DNA damage in human lymphocytes in vitro. Sodium benzoate generates oxidative stress and has an adverse effect on the immune system, liver, kidneys, and fertility.
  • ❌ Potassium Sorbate: preservative,  Human skin toxicant, or allergen – strong evidence.
Causes serious eye irritation. Associated with rare allergic reactions like urticaria, rash, asthma, and hyperactivity in sensitive individuals, particularly children. Some animal studies note gut microbiome disruption when combined with other preservatives.
