Conventional Hair Treatments

Avoid conventional hair treatments made with toxic emulsifiers, emollients, humectants, proteins, fragrances, and preservatives.

❌ Toxic Emollients: Toxic emollients are silicones such as dimethicone. They coat hair, and they are polluting since they do not biodegrade. They use them because they keep the hair moisturized.

❌ Mineral oil: Derived from crude oil, it may contain impurities harmful to the skin

❌ Silicones: dimethicone and cyclomethicone can build up over time, making hair heavy and preventing moisture absorption

❌ Alcohols: Short-chain alcohols like isopropyl alcohol and ethanol can dry out hair and scalp, leading to breakage and irritation

❌ PVP/VA copolymer: A petroleum-derived chemical that can cause scalp irritation and respiratory issues
❌ Toxic Humectants: Irritating humectants are butylene glycol, propylene glycol, and ethylene glycol. Used because they give a full look to the hair.
❌ Toxic Fragrance: added to mask the toxic smell of conventional shampoo. These unnatural fragrances are strong and can create allergic reactions, dermatitis, respiratory distress, and potential effects on the reproductive system. Choose only shampoos with essential oils.
❌ Toxic Preservatives: Parabens, Dioxane, and Benzyl Alcohol are toxic, and they are the worst preservatives.

Greenwashing Hair Treatments

Avoid greenwashing hair tretaments made by brands that pretend to be “organic, sustainable, or natural” when they are not. They will use marketing tricks to convince you to buy their products. They may have green packaging to evoke nature while still using petroleum-derived ingredients. They may make claims that are not regulated, promising you safer ingredients when they are controversial:

❌ Ethylhexylglycerin: a preservative classified as an irritant, this substance causes serious eye damage. Severe eye damage was observed in animal testing. Liver effects were observed at low doses in repeat-dose studies in rats. This substance is harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Highly relevant, sensitizer in ‘hypo-allergenic’ cosmetics. To report on 13 patients who presented with allergic contact dermatitis caused by ethylhexylglycerin.

❌ Phenoxyethanol: preservative classified as an irritanttoxic, and harmful. It can have adverse effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems, linked to allergic contact urticaria and dermatitis. Made by the reaction of corrosive phenol with carcinogen ethylene oxide. Exposure to phenoxyethanol has been linked to reactions ranging from eczema to severe, life-threatening allergic reactions. Infant oral exposure to phenoxyethanol can acutely affect nervous system function.
