Conventional Barbecue Tools

Choosing safe barbecue tools is essential for protecting your health during grilling. Several common materials and tool types can introduce toxins or physical hazards when exposed to high heat. Here’s what to avoid:

Avoid plastic grill tools: they may containing BPA or phthalates. Plastics can degrade under high temperatures, releasing chemicals that may disrupt hormones and cause other health issues. Black plastic utensils, in particular, may contain recycled electronic waste and flame-retardant chemicals, posing serious health risks when heated.

Avoid tools with nonstick coatings:  such as Teflon (PTFE), especially if you grill at high temperatures. When overheated (above 500°F), these coatings can emit fumes containing PFOA, PFAS, or PTFE.

Avoid grill tools with painted finishes or low-quality coatings, as these may contain lead, cadmium, or other harmful metals.

Safer Barbecue Tools

  • ✅ Stainless steel (rust-resistant and non-reactive)

  • ✅ Cast iron or carbon steel (especially when properly oiled)

  • ✅ Untreated bamboo or hardwood (for lower-heat uses)
