Conventional Maca

Avoid conventional maca since they are made with cheaper ingredients sourced from controversial origins. They may contain pesticides and other chemicals and they are not third-party tested.

Maca is naturally a hardy crop that grows in harsh climates above 13,000 feet where few pests survive. However, as global demand surged, intense conventional farming practices were introduced, particularly in newer cultivation regions like Yunnan, China, and lower-altitude valleys in Peru.

  • ❌ Fungicides and Soil Fumigants: Conventional farmers often treat fields with harsh chemical fumigants to protect the underground tubers from soil-borne fungi and root rot.

  • ❌ Organophosphates: Some conventional farms use synthetic pesticides to ensure high yields. Traces of these chemicals can be absorbed directly into the porous skin of the root.

  • ❌ Hidden synthetic drugs: FDA Warning   cheap or unverified conventional maca brands

Greenewashing Maca

Avoid greenwashing maca made by brands that pretend to be natural, safer, organic, and green when it is not. They may use misleading marketing claims to get you to buy their products.

These brands could be selling  organic  or natural maca but then having high heavy metal content. Maca is a root, it directly absorbs whatever is in the surrounding soil. Studies tracked maca fields in Peru with heavy metal contamination from nearby mining and metallurgical activities.

California Proposition 65 warning. means they have heavy metal content higher than the limits set by the California organization.

❌ Lead (Pb): Absorbed from soil contaminated by local mining runoff and old industrial fertilizers.

❌ Cadmium (Cd): Enters fields through wastewater irrigation or phosphate fertilizers.

Arsenic (As): Natural geological deposits in high-altitude volcanic soils leached into the crop.
