Have a Soak: your foot file works best on wet feet. Bring your foot file into the shower with you, or go full "spa treatment" and do a ten-minute foot soak.
It gently exfoliates: move in a gentle rhythm with the sharp side of the file over calluses. This will stimulate skin cell turnover and help to prevent injury. Be prepared to use your stone over several different exfoliating sessions if it's been a while since you last cared for your feet.
