Hypoallergenic Shampoo

🌿On this page, you will find the best organic hypoallergenic shampoos on the market made without toxic ingredients such as talc or other toxic powder forms, or controversial ingredients such as clays, which contain heavy metals.

Conventional Hypoallergenic Shampoos

I learned that both conventional shampoos contain common chemical ingredients and irritants such as fragrances, endocrine-disrupting parabens, SLA, Formaldehyde, sulfates, and all the ingredients that end in -eth (e.g. Ceteareth, Laureth-4, Laureth-23), also Polysorbate-20, Cocamidopropyl betaine, Triethanolamine, and Cocamide DEA/MEA.

Conventional shampoos and conditioners contain synthetic proteins and plasticizers that coat the hair. Hair conditioners cover up the damage that the harsh detergents in the shampoo do to your hair.

Here is why I don’t use conventional hypoallergenic shampoo: they are made of harsh cleaning agents, carrying agents, additives, fragrances, and harsh preservatives.

❌ Toxic Cleaning agents: contain synthetic and chemical surfactants such as Cocamide, PEGs- (SLES), (SLS).

❌ Toxic Carrying agents: are the base of shampoo and are the active ingredients. Don’t use a shampoo with the carrying agent propylene glycol: it causes dermatitis, and it is rated 3 on ewg.org

Toxic Emulsifiers: They are added to create the consistency of shampoo. Toxic emulsifiers are MEA, DEA, TEA, and MIPA, and ingredients with PEG-n are considered carcinogenic.

❌ Toxic Emollients: they keep the hair moisturized. Toxic emollients are silicones such as dimethicone. They coat hair and they are polluting since they do not biodegrade.

❌ Toxic Humectants: they give a fuller look to the hair. Irritating humectants are butylene glycol, propylene glycol, and ethylene glycol.

❌ Toxic Preservatives: the worst preservatives are Parabens, Dioxane, and Benzyl Alcohol

❌ Fragrance: is added to mask the toxic smell of conventional shampoo. These unnatural fragrances are strong and can create allergic reactions, dermatitis, respiratory distress, and potential effects on the reproductive system.

Greenwashing Hypoallergenic Shampoos

Avoid greenwashing hair shampoos made by brands that pretend to be “organic, eco-friendly, natural, or safe” when they are not. They will use marketing tricks to convince them to buy their products. They may have green packaging to evoke nature while still using petroleum-derived ingredients.

They may use “star” natural ingredients mixed with other synthetic, conventional, irritating, and cheap ingredients. They may make claims that are not regulated, promising you safer ingredients when they are controversial:

❌ Ethylhexylglycerin: a preservative classified as an irritant, this substance causes serious eye damage. Severe eye damage was observed in animal testing. Liver effects observed at low doses in repeat-dose studies in rats. This substance is harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects. Highly relevant, sensitizer in ‘hypoallergenic’ cosmetics. To report on 13 patients who presented with allergic contact dermatitis caused by ethylhexylglycerin.

❌ Phenoxyethanol: preservative classified as an irritanttoxic, and harmful. It can have adverse effects on the central and peripheral nervous systems, linked to allergic contact uritica and dermatitis. Made by the reaction of corrosive phenol with carcinogen ethylene oxide. Exposure to phenoxyethanol has been linked to reactions ranging from eczema to severe, life-threatening allergic reactions. Infant oral exposure to phenoxyethanol can acutely affect nervous system function.

Organic Hypoallergenic Shampoos

🌿 Once I switched to truly natural shampoos, my irritation magically disappeared, and I have softer, stronger hair and a healthier scalp. If you have any issues with your hair or scalp, it can be the chemical content and the cheap ingredients found in conventional or greenwashing shampoos, including the expensive ones!
