Organic Mattress

Conventional Mattress Brands

Avoid conventional mattresses made with cheap, toxic materials and questionable chemicals. They can emit toxic fumes into your bedroom and environment:

  • Polyurethane Foam: Memory Foams and flexible polyurethane foam are cheap, unhealthy, toxic, synthetic, polluting, and petroleum by-products (fossil fuels). It emits VOCs—harmful chemicals that can cause respiratory irritation or other health problems.
  • Fiberglass: This is the most common replacement used by cheap “bed-in-a-box” brands. It creates a massive physical mess and respiratory hazard if the mattress cover is ever opened or torn.

Greenwashing Mattress Brands

Avoid greenwashing mattresses made by brands that pretend to be “organic”,  “natural”,  “healthier” or “sustainable” when they are not! They will, use their marketing tricks to convince you to buy their products.

  • Questionable Claims: when they claim to be all organic without a certification.
  • ❌ CertiPUR-US:  CertiPUR-US Certificate applies only to the polyurethane foam in a mattress. If you see this label that means you are buying a synthetic foam mattress. So avoid that!
  • ❌ Silica & Rayon Blends: The Synthetic Substitute found in many mid-tier brands weave inherently fire-resistant rayon fibers with crushed silica (sand). When exposed to heat, the rayon chars and the silica forms a protective glass-like barrier that blocks the flame.

The Best Organic Mattress Certifications

Here is how to get the best organic mattresses on the market! When shopping for a certified organic mattress look at these the certifications:

The most important certifications for mattresses are: the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and, for mattresses that contain latex, the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). They practice mission-based principles designed to promote health, limit environmental impact, and support social responsibility. These two are the fundamental certifications you need to look at!

✅ GOLS Certification: The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) is a materials and processing standard for organic latex and finished latex foam. Organic Latex Foam is a plant-based and renewable material produced harvested organically from the sap of rubber trees. Made without the use of synthetic latex or fillers. Certified organic latex foam mattress naturally contours to your sleeping position while providing comfort, durability, and breathability. Quicker recovery time, less motion transfer, and provide natural cooling properties. It is also naturally mold and dust mites resistant.

  • ✅ Dunlop Latex  Foam: Dunlop latex is denser.
  • Talalay  Latex Foam: Talalay latex is softer and airier.

✅ GOTS Certification: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the world’s leading processing standard for organic textiles and fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. GOTS requires that at least 95 percent of the materials in the mattress be certified organic, and it prohibits outright the use of certain substances, even for the other 5%, such as chemical flame retardants and polyurethane, the chief ingredient of memory foam. (This is for cotton, wool material used in the mattress)

Additional certifications:

✅ UL/GREENGUARD: UL GREENGUARD Certification is a certification that less than 1% of all mattresses receive. It is a third-party certification program that tests for chemical emissions from consumer products and materials. GreenGuard Certificate

Oeko-Tex Standard 100 doesn’t ensure that a mattress’s fiber is produced organically; it does set limits for the emission of harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are linked to ozone, smog, respiratory illnesses, and memory impairment. It also bans the use of certain chemical flame retardants, colorants, and allergenic dyes.
