We and the planet deserve the highest quality of pure and sustainable products. Thatās why I only recommend organic products that are certified by the world-renowned GOTS Certified Organic certification.
There are a few powerful individuals who take advantage of something that is shared with the rest of humanity for their own interest, and that is the planet! š
Cotton is considered the worldās dirtiest crop due to its heavy use of pesticides. Conventional cotton requires farmers to purchase seeds every year from AG chemical companies like Monsanto.
Roundup Ready CottonĀ (RR Cotton) has been genetically modified to survive the herbicide weapon calledĀ glyphosate,Ā Roundup, invented by Monsanto. Resulting in predictable consequences of stronger weed resistance toĀ glyphosate, which in turn led to an increase in pesticide use. TheĀ glyphosateĀ rate of application per crop year has tripled on cotton farms.Ā
We can either wait for the institutions to act to protect us, or we can take action now with our wallets to change the system.Ā We can start now to protect our health and the health of the planet by not feeding the wallets of these toxic and extremely wealthy companies. While there are those who keep intoxicating us and the polluting world, it is up to us not to feed this unsustainable system.
How? Here is what you can do:
Avoid conventional towels made with toxic cotton. Cotton is considered the worldās dirtiest crop due to its heavy use of pesticides. Conventional cotton requires farmers to purchase seeds every year from AG chemical companies like Monsanto.
Roundup Ready Cotton (RR Cotton) has been genetically modified to survive the herbicide weapon called glyphosate, Roundup, invented by Monsanto. Resulting in predictable consequences of stronger weed resistance to glyphosate, which in turn led to an increase in pesticide use. The glyphosate rate of application per crop year has tripled on cotton farms.Ā
ā Conventional Cotton is the most polluted crop in the world. Skip the conventional cotton bath towels, doesn’t matter are they are expensive or how fancy the designer of that brand is, if they are not organic, there is nothing about luxury, and they are not worth the high price! Avoid conventional cotton of any kind. Any cotton brand without the Organic Certification seal is considered conventional = toxic.
āĀ Synthetic material: petroleum-derived and responsible for microplastics. Synthetic fiber is made of polyester, nylon, acrylic, spandex, rayon, or polyamide. These items release 9 MILLION plastic microfibers into the ocean every time we wash them. They make up 35% of the primary microplastics found in the oceans!
Avoid greenwashing towels made by brands that pretend to be organic, sustainable, non-toxic, or eco-friendly when they are not. They will use their marketing trick to convince you to buy their products.
āĀ Greenwashing Cotton: Even if they claim āorganicā or ānaturalāĀ cotton, if they don’t display the GOTS Certified seal, they may have something to hide. These terms are not regulated.Ā
āĀ Recycled synthetic material: it still releases microplastics when washingĀ
āĀ Controversial manufacturing: made by exploiting child labor and in other unfair environmentsĀ
āĀ Avoid Viscose AKA Rayon: Viscose Rayon is responsible forĀ deforestation in Indonesia.Ā Every year,Ā 3.2 billion treesĀ are cut down to make paper packaging or fabrics such as rayon and viscose.
Viscose fabric is made from cellulose thatās been extracted from the bark, wood, or leaves of plants. Itās most often made from bamboo, pine, or eucalyptus trees. Viscose is used to make clothing (especially loungewear and activewear), sheets, and bedding. Viscose is toxic: chemicals are then used to break down cellulose so it can be spun into viscose, some of which are toxic. One of the most ubiquitous and dangerous is carbon disulfide.ā
āĀ Avoid Bamboo viscose AKA Bamboo rayon: It is a bio-based semi-synthetic material created from cellulose fibers from bamboo. Even though bamboo is grown without pesticides, it is made into viscose, which requires toxic chemicals (chemicals such as carbon disulfide, solvents such as sodium hydroxide ā a.k.a caustic soda) and a polluting process. Plus it is mostly made in China! Therefore, bamboo viscose is greenwashingĀ
āĀ Avoid Modal: viscose has been made using a closed-loop production process. This more sustainable process also tends to lead to slightly stronger, more durable fabrics.
āĀ Avoid Lyocell: its processing also omits certain harmful chemicals altogether.
āĀ Avoid Lenzing: Lenzing is a fiber production company based in Austria.Ā
āĀ Avoid Tencel: Tencel is Lenzingās trademarked version of lyocell or modal yarn
The best towels are certified organic by GOTS. Certified Organic Towels are made with āCertified organic cotton by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), which certifies that it is truly organic, made without toxic chemicals and pesticides found in conventional cotton, and produced following strict environmental and ethical rules.
ā Ā The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)Ā is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. It was created to set criteria for how fibers and textiles must be ginned, knitted, woven, dyed, manufactured, and labeled.Ā
The standard covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading, and distribution of all textiles made from at certified organic natural fibers.
GOTS is the gold standard for the sustainable processing of clothing and textiles made with organically grown fibers (like organic cotton). To be certified by GOTS, a garment needs to contain organically grown fibers. Not be treated with bleach, formaldehyde, or any other toxic substances, and be colored with approved, nontoxic dyes.
The aim of the standard is to ensure the organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing, up to labeling.
Ā
GOTS is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for fibers that certifies the product does not have toxic heavy metals, pesticides, GMOs, chlorine bleaching, toxic dyes, or PVC (all things that conventional cotton has šš).
āš It also certifies that the production has respected ecological rules on waste, water use, disposal, and protection of the environment, that it has followed rules that respect the workers, and finally protection for the consumerās health.
