Have you ever thought about what solvents dry cleaners use?

By asking a simple question to our dry cleaners, we can then decide to get our clothes cleaned somewhere else that helps assure safety and makes a bigger impact in our home and on the environment!
The majority use a highly polluting, carcinogenic solvent called PERC or perchloroethylene.

The EPA has classified PERC as a toxic air pollutant: “If the chemical enters the ground, it can contaminate both the soil we use to grow our food and our water table. This chemical is then stored in our body fat for an indefinite amount of time.” According to the EPA, “...exposure to PERC can occur when people use products containing PERC; spend time in dry cleaners that use PERC; live above or adjacent to these dry cleaning facilities; or bring dry-cleaned garments into their home.” California will not permit this highly polluting and carcinogenic method to continue and has demanded that dry cleaners come up with safer, eco-friendly alternatives by 2023.
Since only California has banned it, for now, you will need to ask your dry cleaner which solvent they use!! Many dry cleaners claim to be “green” when they are not, AKA greenwashing. They proudly will mention methods such as GreenEarth, considered better than PERC, but still potentially carcinogenic, according to studies. SolvonK4 method, has butylal, a classified skin irritant by the European Chemical Agency. The hydrocarbon method also is considered not green at all.
It’s why it is UP TO US to look after our own health and the safety of our community and find safer alternatives and here they are:
