🌎 10.5 million tons of textile waste ends up in the landfill every year just in the USA!

DO YOU KNOW: It takes 713 gallons of water to make a non-organic t-shirt. 713 gallons of water is enough for a person to drink for 900 days. The water consumption of organic cotton is 91% lower than conventional cotton.

The irresponsible manufacturer produces their garments using toxic, polluting, synthetic, and cheap materials to increase their profit at the expense of their customer’s health and environment.

Avoid Conventional Socks

Avoid conventional socks made with toxic dyes and cheap material, often synthetic and petroleum-derived. They contain chemicals that affect health, they are linked to hormonal imbalance and infertility.

❌ Synthetic clothes: they are made of polyester, nylon, acrylic, spandex, rayon, or polyamide. These clothing release 9MILLION plastic microfibers into the ocean every time we wash them. They make up 35% of the primary microplastics found in the oceans!

❌ Conventional Cotton: conventionally grown cotton requires unsustainable amounts of chemical pesticides, which has a harsh effect on the environment and on the workers’ health as well. Avoid conventional cotton of any kind. Any cotton brand without the Organic Certification seal is considered conventional = toxic. Here is why: Cotton is considered the world’s dirtiest crop. There are few powerful individuals that take advantage of something that is shared with the rest of humanity for their own interest and that is the planet! Roundup Ready Cotton (RR Cotton), has been genetically modified to survive the herbicide weapon called glyphosate Roundup, invented by Monsanto. Resulting in predictable consequences of stronger weed resistance to glyphosate, which in turn led to an increase in pesticide use. The glyphosate rate of application per crop year has tripled on cotton farms. 

Avoid Greenwashing Socks

Avoid Greenwashing socks made by brands that pretend to be sustainable, or eco-friendly when they are not. They will try to convince the products are somehow green without proving it. 

They claim to be organic without certification. It doesn’t matter how big or luxurious is their brand, or if it is a designer line, if it is not made with responsible material in fair production, there is nothing sexy here. When the brand claim natural or even organic without showing the certification seal, it has something to hide. 

❌ Greenwashing Cotton: Even if they claim “organic” or “natural”  cotton, if they don’t display the GOTS Certified seal, they may have something to hide.

❌ Recycled synthetic material: it still releases microplastic when washing 

❌ Controversial manufactory: dresses made by exploiting child labor and in other unfair environments 

❌ Avoid Viscose AKA Rayon: Viscose Rayon is responsible for deforestation in Indonesia. Every year, 3.2 billion trees are cut down to make paper packaging or fabrics such as rayon and viscose.

Viscose fabric is made from cellulose that’s been extracted from the bark, wood, or leaves of plants. It’s most often made from bamboo, pine, or eucalyptus trees. Viscose is used to make clothing (especially loungewear and activewear), sheets, and bedding. Viscose is toxic: chemicals are then used to break down cellulose so it can be spun into viscose—some of which are toxic. One of the most ubiquitous, and dangerous, is carbon disulfide.​

❌ Avoid Bamboo viscose AKA Bamboo rayon: It is a bio-based semi-synthetic material created from cellulose fibers from bamboo. Even though bamboo is grown without pesticides, it is made into viscose which requires toxic chemicals (chemicals carbon disulfide, solvents such as sodium hydroxide — a.k.a caustic soda) and a polluting process. Plus it is mostly made in China! Therefore bamboo viscose is greenwashing 

❌ Avoid Modal: viscose that has been made using a closed-loop production process. This more sustainable process also tends to lead to slightly stronger, more durable fabrics.

❌ Avoid Lyocell: it’s processing also omits certain harmful chemicals altogether.

❌ Avoid Lenzing: Lenzing is a fiber production company based in Austria. 

❌ Avoid Tencel: Tencel is Lenzing’s trademarked version of lyocell or modal yarn

🌎We can either wait for the institutions to act to protect us or we can take action to change the system by not feeding the wallets of these toxic and extremely wealthy companies. We can start now to protect our health and the health of the planet While there are those who keep intoxicating us and the polluting world, it is up to us to not feed this unsustainable system.

Take action now with your wallets to change the system, and reward responsible and suitable brands. Choose organic and natural fiber such as cotton but not just any cotton, but GOTS Certified Organic Cotton!

✅ The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. It was created to set criteria for how fibers and textiles must be ginned, knitted, woven, dyed, manufactured, and labeled. 

The standard covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading, and distribution of all textiles made from at certified organic natural fibers. 

• Organic: This label requires that a product contains at least 95% certified organic fibers.
• Made with Organic: This label requires a minimum of 70% certified organic fibers.

🍃 GOTS Certification also certifies the product does not have toxic heavy metal, pesticides, GMO, chlorine bleaching, toxic dyes, PVC, (all things that conventional cotton has 🙈🙊).

The aim of the standard is to ensure organic status of textiles, from harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling. It also certifies that the production has respected ecologic rules on waste, water use, disposal, and protection of the environment, that it has followed rules that respect the workers and finally protection for the consumer’s health.
