🌸👗 Are you looking for a safer, non-toxic, hypoallergenic Dry Cleaner? 🍃 Great! You just find and it is listed below!🌸
Avoid Conventional dry cleaners which use a very toxic method called Perchloroethylene, simply called PERC
❌ PERC poses health risks to humans, it threatens the environment, and pollutes the water, listed under California’s Proposition 65, banned in 2023 in California, even if they don’t use PERC there are still other controversial PERC replacements. Ask your dry cleaner which products-methods they use!
According to the EPA blog:
EPA has classified PERC as a toxic air pollutant. Generally, it escapes into the outdoor air through open windows, vents, and air-conditioning systems. Once outdoors, PERC can remain in the atmosphere for several weeks. Far worse, if the chemical enters the ground, it can contaminate both the soil we use to grow our food and our water table. This chemical is then stored in our body fat for an indefinite amount of time.
According to a Chemical Fact Sheet prepared by the EPA’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics, exposure to PERC can occur when people use products containing PERC; spend time in dry cleaners that use PERC; live above or adjacent to these dry cleaning facilities; or bring dry-cleaned garments into their home.
If your cleaner claims to be “green”, “organic” or “eco-friendly” check their methods, they could be using anything but safe products. When you are taking your clothes to the dry cleaners, check that they are not using greenwashing methods made with toxic solvents such as GreenEarth method!
Petroleum and silicone pose their own set of environmental and occupational problems. Petroleum dry clean emissions are classified as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are both smog-forming and are classified as greenhouse gases.
❌ GreenEarth: this method (despite the misleading name) is not environmentally friendly! GreenEarth uses a silicone-based solvent (siloxane or D-5). According to a study, it increased the risk of uterine cancer in female rats. This led the EPA to consider this method may be carcinogenic. Check here
“The silicone-based dry cleaning solvent (decamethylpentacyclosiloxane) has been identified as a potential carcinogen. In addition, both petroleum and silicone-based solvents are combustible and produce a substantial amount of hazardous waste.”
❌ SOLVONK4: it is a new dry cleaning method that has been promoted as eco-friendly. It is not safe according to this study
SolvonK4 contains several toxic chemicals: butylal, the main ingredient in SolvonK4, Formaldehyde, and butanol. *NIOSH considers formaldehyde to be a potential occupational human carcinogen. These chemicals can be produced by SolvonK4. This solvent may react with water in the presence of heat and acid to release formaldehyde and butanol. The long-term human health effects of SolvonK4 are unknown.
❌ Stoddard solvent: Toxic and polluting! Learn more here It comes from the refining of crude oil. If you use products that contain Stoddard solvent and do not wear protective clothing, you may be exposed if it gets on your skin. You might be exposed to Stoddard solvent near a hazardous waste site by breathing it in the air. When you breathe in Stoddard solvent, it can quickly enter your bloodstream. The chemical components that makeup Stoddard solvent will then be absorbed by different tissues in your body. It may also enter the brain, and a large portion may be stored in body fat.
❌ DF-2000: considered to be hazardous. It is petroleum-derived and made by Exxon-Mobil. The EPA lists DF-2000 as a neurotoxin and skin and eye irritant for workers; and its use can contribute to smog and global warming, just like Stoddard solvent.
Repeated exposure may cause skin dryness or cracking. If swallowed, may be aspirated and cause lung damage; may be irritating to the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs.
If inhaled, it can cause respiratory irritation, dizziness, nausea, or unconsciousness.
Vapor/aerosol concentrations above recommended exposure levels are irritating to the eyes and respiratory tract and may cause headaches, dizziness, anesthesia, drowsiness, unconsciousness, and other central nervous system effects including death
🍃 The safest dry cleaning methods, according to UCLA environmental studies, are: ✅“Wet Cleaning” method uses a computer-controlled washer and dryer. It cleans gently and is free of VOCs. It eliminates health and safety risks. The cost is also lower. The issue here is the water resource
✅ “Liquid carbon dioxide” (CO2) method recaptures the CO2 that’s already a byproduct of several manufacturers and is recycled into a liquid form. It is the safest, non-toxic, non-flammable, and eco-friendly. CO2 is considered the most eco-friendly option available for a dry cleaner. And the only dry cleaners method in the USA approved by the FDA.
This method requires sophisticated and expensive machines and there are only a few dry cleaners to offer this method in the entire Country.
Here is the only dry cleaner that offers this eco-friendly, cleaner, and safer method and it ships anywhere in the US for free!
